Message from Network Rail

Advance notice of Severn Tunnel rail closure this summer

We’re getting in touch to provide advance notice of Network Rail improvement works taking place in the Severn Tunnel, between South Wales and the West of England in July. Network Rail will be doing track renewal and essential drainage works in the tunnel itself.
As a result no trains will run between Bristol and South Wales from Wednesday 3 July to Thursday 18 July, as well as the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July.
Our services between London and South Wales will be diverted via Gloucester and as a result these services won’t stop at Bristol Parkway. A limited number of trains will be running between Bristol Parkway and London Paddington in the morning and the evening only. Our services from Portsmouth and the South West which usually run to Cardiff Central will instead terminate at Bristol Parkway.
We will only have a very limited rail replacement bus service in place between Bristol Parkway and Severn Tunnel Junction during this closure. Customers wishing to travel between South Wales and Bristol should instead travel on trains via Gloucester, where services will continue to run to both Bristol and South Wales.
Valid tickets between the South West, Bristol and South Wales will be accepted via Gloucester, this enables customers to make their journeys wholly by train and to enjoy all the usual on-board and at-station facilities. Journey times are extended by around 30 minutes.
Transport for Wales and CrossCountry train services to/from South Wales via Gloucester or Cheltenham Spa remain largely unaffected by this closure, but we would still advise checking all journeys before travelling at gwr.com/check.
Journey planners are in the process of being updated, and we’ll also be making customers aware through at station and on train announcements, station posters, and traditional and social media.
More information on the works and the impact on our service available at gwr.com/bristol.

Green light to create community space on former Ship Inn Site

The former Ship Inn site in Stonehouse took a huge leap towards becoming a community space this week after councillors on Stroud District Council’s Strategy & Resources Committee gave a green light to the people of Stonehouse to shape a new future for the land.

The decision paves the way for the formation of a working group of key stakeholders – including representatives from Stonehouse Town Council, Stroud District Council, ShIPS, town businesses and community organisations – who, over the next 18 months, will work towards establishing a community use that all Stonehouse residents and visitors can enjoy on the 0.6-acre site, which lies between the canal and the A419.

Stonehouse Mayor Cllr Carol Kambites said: “We welcome the committee’s decision and look forward to grasping this huge opportunity to develop a thriving community space for the people of Stonehouse that will be a huge benefit for young and old alike – enhancing health and wellbeing and contributing to the future prosperity that restoration of the canal will deliver for our town.”

Cllr Marcus Dixon, Chair of community group ShIPS said: “This is a landmark decision for Stonehouse and its community. We now need to work really hard to get the result Stonehouse has pushed for, over a number of years, which the town fully deserves!”

Be a Councillor Event – Wednesday 6 September 2023

Do you have an interest in your local community and want to make a difference to the residents in the Stroud District? If the answer is yes, have you thought about standing for election as a Councillor?

Stroud District Council are holding a ‘Be a Councillor’ event on Wednesday 6 September 2023 in the Council Chamber at Ebley Mill for prospective candidates at both District and Parish/Town to learn more about what being a Councillor entails and hearing first hand from current Councillors on their experiences.

Local elections in Stroud are due to take place on Thursday 2 May 2024, therefore now is the perfect time to consider whether standing for election and becoming a Councillor is right for you. You do not have to belong or represent a political party to stand for election. We hope that the event will attract people who have different background and experiences that they can bring to their role of a Councillor to make a difference to the residents they could represent.

The ’Be a Councillor’ event will begin at 6pm for anyone who is interested in becoming a Parish/Town Councillor and 7pm for anyone who is interested in becoming a District Councillor.

The event promises to be a great opportunity for members of the public to understand and discover the role of a Councillor, what support can be provided to Councillor and have the opportunity to speak to current standing District and Parish/Town Councillors.

Please email democratic.services@stroud.gov.uk to register your interest for the event, or more information, please call 01453 766321.

Stonehouse Community Arboretum

Stonehouse Community Arboretum is receiving national attention. Stonehouse now features in three national/international best practice documents, including one produced by the UK government.

Stonehouse has recently been mentioned in the new Trees & Design Action Group (TDAG) document Trees, Planning and Development: A Guide for Delivery, which was published last week. Attached is the relevant section (p13), and the whole document can be downloaded here: https://www.tdag.org.uk/trees-planning-and-development.html.
Previously,  the  Arboretum Management Plan has  been mentioned as best practice in the recent document from the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Tree Council, A trees and woodlands strategy toolkit for local authorities (available here: https://treecouncil.org.uk/what-we-do/science-and-research/tree-strategies/).

Stonehouse has also been included as a case study in the new London Tree Officers Association/Arboricultural Association publication Sustainable water management: Trees are part of the solution, which will be launched in the next couple of weeks.

In addition, John Parker from the Stonehouse-based Arboricultural Association, has featured the Stonehouse Project in presentations around the world, which this year included a couple of talks he delivered in Ukraine, where there was a lot of interest.

STONEHOUSE MARKET CIC

Stonehouse Town Council strongly rejects the allegations made in Cllr Housden’s Spring Update regarding Stonehouse Town Market.

Stonehouse Town Council has not requested a charge of £408 per week for use of the town greens as claimed.

From the outset, Stonehouse Town Council has been and continues to be supportive of a thriving and successful market in the town, and in January 2022 agreed to waive town green hire fees for a period of 6 months, saving Stonehouse Market CIC considerable start-up costs.

It is the duty of Stonehouse Town Council to be fair and equitable to all businesses and organisations in the town, including all those who hire Town Council facilities. Since December 2022, multiple attempts by Stonehouse Town Council have failed to persuade the two Directors of Stonehouse Market CIC to attend a meeting to finalise an operating agreement for 2023.

Both Directors of Stonehouse Market CIC are strongly urged to respond to the numerous requests for a meeting by contacting the Town Clerk so that this can be finalised as soon as possible.
